Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – January 20, 2004 – In keeping with my appreciation of fluffy towels and bathrobes, I’m always thrilled to have scented soaps and perfume at the ready. These are a couple of things that are enormously pleasurable and accessible without being expensive.
Stop by the perfume counters at any of the department stores or have a chat with the gals behind the cosmetics station at your drug store, and you’ll find an array of soaps and perfumes to delight any nose and most budgets. Dab a drop of fragrance on your inner wrist and wait a few minutes for the scent to develop and voila … a guaranteed smile!
Scented soaps come in all shapes and sizes – from substantial bars of butter soap from France to small guest soaps that are wonderful for personal use. They also look fabulous stacked in a crystal dish on the bathroom vanity. A hint of sophistication. You can find every scent imaginable from green apple, raspberry, sandalwood, vanilla, passion fruit, lavender, verbena and peach to grapefruit, strawberry, cocoa butter, honey and jasmine. How heavenly.
A scented bar of soap typically costs anywhere from two to eight dollars. Many soaps have matching hand and body lotions to soothe dry winter skin and to refresh your body during those sizzling hot days in July.
Make it a fun game to find scents that inspire you – then change them with the time of day and the season. Light, fruity scents can be fabulous for summer and deeper spicy scents become the cooler weather. I personally like vanilla soaps in any season, but am also partial to cocoa butter and the familiar aroma of green apple.
It always makes me remember happy days when my childhood friend Patricia and I used to sit in the trees in her parents’ orchard, eating green apples and watching the horses. We just sat and day-dreamed as summer drifted by. It’s amazing how just the hint of a familiar scent can bring back the details of a long ago time.
My favourite perfume is ‘Coco’ by Channel. I’ve been wearing it since it was first introduced in the eighties. The beautiful scent never ceases to please me. It has become an old acquaintance, and friends and strangers alike often comment on its sensual appeal. I also like ‘Tresor’ by Lacome and ‘Angel’ by Thierry Mugler.
So have some fun finding out what your favourite scents are and then indulge yourself with a little dab on your wrists and another behind your ears. Then march out your front door and conquer the world!
