Who Works In A Slaughterhouse Or A Kill Shelter
Who Works In A Slaughterhouse Or A Kill Shelter – If you have already made the connection between animal suffering and human responsibility you are probably already a vegan or vegetarian. If not – in all probability if someone said to us – here is your pig on a leash – kill him yourself for dinner tonight – most people would not be able to follow through with the task.
We take our ill, aging or unwanted animals to the vet or shelter to be “put to sleep” – we are not capable of looking at a pet and killing him – taking away his life – disposing of his lifeless body.
Because of that reality – “we” (humans) hire others to do these jobs for us. We are cowards. We do not want to know how our food is processed – or what happens to the cat or dog after we close the door and steal away from the animal – like a thief in the night. If we are the worst kind of abuser – we just abandon our animals on a downtown street or at night on a lonely country road.
We humans – those who care for and respect animals and those who do not are polar opposites. I know the attributes of people who love animals. So – I’m curious – who are you – people who kill animals for a living? I have questions – so many questions? I am trying to understand what makes you do the work you do? I’m working on the assumption that this is not the only job you could get. Does the day pass quickly or slowly? Does killing become boring? Do you ever really “see” the animal you are killing or are you just dead inside? Perhaps you enjoy your “work” and relish the power of taking a life. Maybe you enjoy their fear – get a little tingle of dominance and control that you lack elsewhere in your life.
When you were a kid did you think – “I can hardly wait to grow up and get a job killing animals? Did you abuse and torture defenceless animals when you were a kid in preparation for your future work? Did you have a pet at home that you enjoyed abusing? Are you a hunter? Do you enjoy inflicting pain on confined and terrified animals? When you get home at night do you say to your family over dinner – Well – I killed 360 pigs today or we gassed 46 dogs this afternoon – what a day!? What do you say in front of your child’s career day class?”
When I look at the countless undercover videos that have been taken at animal shelters and factory farms – there seems to be a common thread. The Mercy For Animals Canada videos that have aired recently that prove appalling cruelty in the pork – chicken/egg – turkey – veal and dairy industries in Canada – show workers deliberately inflicting heinous suffering on animals who have no means of escape. The cruelty is deliberate and intense – it is unnecessary – it is enjoyed and laughed over. There appear to be no consequences – with supervisors often ignoring or involved in the inflicting of pain on the animals.
Do you recognize their fear? Do you understand that they want to live?
Comments that I have heard on other videos are equally disturbing. I paraphrase here as the abusers are not known and I have watched countless videos from all over the world. “I love to poke out the eyes of the cows and watch them bang into the walls”. “Shove that live piggy back under the water in the scalding tank – she’s cookin’ now” – “Do you want to see me fuck this cow with a pipe” – “Get that bitch into the gas chamber – I don’t have all day here” – “They don’t all get stunned properly – the line moves too fast” – “Just smash the baby pig’s head on the ground and toss him on the pile” – “It’s just a chicken – broken wings don’t matter – they’re not flying anywhere” – “I hate black cats and dogs – I like it when they die slowly” – “Oh-eee look at her squirm” – “I love to see the fear in their eyes” – “Just kick that stupid calf off the truck – his front legs are broken and he can’t stand”.
Whenever horrific cruelty is exposed – the “suits” who run the companies or animal shelters express “shock and dismay” and immediately claim “this is an isolated incident and we are doing a full investigation”. “We train our staff carefully and respond immediately to any concerns”.
If this is true why do they want ag-gag laws? Why do they object to videos in slaughterhouses? Why do kill shelters even exist when dedicated efforts could find many abandoned pets a new home? Why are people caught on video torturing or abusing any animals not immediately fired? Why are the codes of business practice not immediately updated when cruelty is exposed? Why do many of these industries police themselves?
So who are you – men and women who kill animals for a living? Are you proud of what you have become as a person? What do you see when you look in the mirror? What is the legacy that you are leaving your children?
What is the mission statement of corporations who profit from misery, confinement and causing deliberate suffering to animals? Is there ever a time when you question your methods? Why do pretend concern when you are caught in undercover stings? Where is your humanity?
Come out and talk to us? We would welcome hearing your side of the debate. Those of us who love and respect animals know where we stand. Let’s hear from you!
