A Logo For – A Beating Heart
I am going to make my goal deadline of taking my new Blog – A Beating Heart – live on Valentines’ Day – February 14, 2013! It has been an idea in my mind for over a year, and a month long labour of love to design and create this site. Now that the work is done it needs to find a place in the world! This project involved a number of equally important steps.
Pick a Word Press Blog Theme – It was very time consuming – previewing dozens of possible blog templates – but it was such an important element of the blog. I needed one that was especially picture friendly so I finally selected a template called Dandelion. Decide on a Blog Name – this was also a very time consuming and crucial part of the process. Decide on Blog Pages and create the contact. Writing the “Mission” was really significant to me. Decide on Blog Categories – there are 27 . Reseaching and writing the introductory content for each category took endless hours and late nights. Learn to navigate the Blog as it was in development.
But what about a logo? Just when I thought I was finished I decided that the Blog should indeed have it’s own symbol. Something very special and memorable. I was chatting with my friend Donna who has spear-headed an impressive Toronto clean up and tree planting project called Friends of the Beltline and she suggested that I chat to Melissa – who had created her beautiful Beltline logo.
That conversation has resulted in the most amazing logo I could ever have hoped to have! My initial chat with Melissa – who is an avowed animal lover – was unhurried and very collaborative. I told her the Blog name and sent her some animal pictures that I thought might be helpful. I explained the mission of the site – which is to create awareness and to give people helpful information – if they care about local, national and global animal issues. I believe that many people would like to help – they just aren’t sure how to make a contribution.
Then I left it up to Melissa. Within a few days she had sent me 4 possible design ideas. Each had merit and highlighted Melissa’s incredibly creative imagination and her fine talent. I decided on a sketch of an elephant that looked a bit like a puzzle or a piece of stained glass. Her thinking was as follows – “The logo illustrates the idea of a broken species – but amongst the pieces is a heart that represents hope as well as love. I invision each shape a different colour and the strong, centred heart a deep red”.
