25 Little Things That Make Life Enjoyable
Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – January 21, 2004 – It’s closing in on the end of January – it’s cold – there is too much snow for my liking. I adore snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning. I like Santa and the reindeer to feel at home and then ‘poof’ it could be gone.
As I write, more fresh snow flakes are floating aimlessly through the air outside my window and banding together on the ground – laying claim to winter. Alas – a perfect reason for a “poor me moment” – but wait – help is on the way. I just had a drink of hot tea with honey. Isn’t that a terrific reason to celebrate, blow a kiss to old man winter and think about all the little things that make up a wonderful day.
So here, in no particular order, are 25 things that I’m grateful for today. If you just think about your own life – I’ll bet you can come up with 25 of your own!
I really, really like my over-sized glass coffee mug. It’s heavy and chunky and I can see how much coffee or tea I have left.
Augie – my canine pal just came into my office, put his paw on my thigh, grinned his silly dog grin at me to let me know he loves me, and then wandered off in search of his brother, Ziggy the cat.
My home fax machine that saves me from having to go to the local corner store on a night like this.
My hand-held calculator – what a bonus when paying bills.
My portable phone. I can walk and talk.
Receiving unexpected e-mail pictures of family & friends.
Warm, wooly slippers.
Scrambled eggs and toast when I don’t feel like cooking.
Fresh-squeezed lime juice in a glass of cold water.
Finding a “chocolate orange” in the kitchen and whamming it on the counter and then having a couple of sections. Okay – I had four.
Wearing my 3 favourite sterling silver bracelets on one wrist.
My little, portable electric heater that keeps my feet warm.
Wearing my jeans and black wool turtleneck because it’s a home office day.
My tear off picture calendar of 365 photos of puppies.
Sitting in my rocking chair with my feet up for a 15 minute coffee break.
My computer genius, who comes to my home whenever I have a technical, computer glitch.
For some reason I only like eating an apple when it’s been cored and sectioned – (there is probably some deep-seated neurotic reason for this – but I don’t care). I have a handy, little dollar store apple corer and it does the job in a flash.
An early evening phone call from a friend suggesting that we get together for lunch next week.
The weather forecast saying that the snow will stop by tomorrow.
Having an hour to myself this evening to finish this month’s selection for my book club.
Stopping to look at the framed Van Gogh prints that hang in my upper and lower hallways. The vibrant colours and simplicity of subject matter always warm my heart and make me smile.
The post man who delivers my mail – rain, sleet or shine.
Ziggy’s friendly ‘meow’ reminding me that it’s time for his dinner. Augie won’t be far behind.
My gas fireplace. Augie discovered its welcome warmth the first winter he was here. It makes cold winter days a joy.
Using my favourite red gel pen to cross out the last entry on today’s “To Do” list.
There is so much in life that is “right”. If you spend time remembering to be thankful for the small treasures and pleasures, you can’t help but find joy in every day!
